Faucet and Sink Repair in Albany, GA: From a Dripping Spout to a Leaking Shower Valve or Hose Bib

Most fixture problems are small until they are not: a drip that raises the bill, a handle that will not shut off, a tub spout that sprays at the wall. This page helps you find which part is failing and decide what is worth fixing.

Match the drip to the worn part: repair or replace

Where it leaks or failsCommon culpritRepair or replace?
Dripping from the spout of a single-handle faucetA worn cartridge or seatUsually a repair; the cartridge is a standard part.
Dripping from a two-handle faucetA worn washer or seat in one handleRepair, if the faucet body is sound.
Water around the base of the faucetA worn O-ring or a loose mountRepair, unless the body is corroded.
Weak flow from the spoutA scaled aerator or a clogged supply lineClean the aerator first.
Water under the sink after running the tapA loose supply line, a compression nut or the drain trapTighten or replace the failed fitting.
Shower runs after the handle is off, or drips at the headA worn shower cartridge or valveRepair; the wall may need to be opened if the valve is old.

If the faucet is older than the fittings under it, or the finish is flaking, a new faucet is a better use of the visit than another repair kit. A plumber should say which it is, and why.

Try this before you call

  1. Close the valve under the sink. Turn the small oval handles clockwise. If they will not turn, or leak when turned, say so when you call; old shutoffs are part of the job.
  2. Check what is wet. Dry the cabinet, run the tap and follow the first drop with a paper towel.
  3. Clean the aerator. Unscrew the tip, soak it in vinegar and rinse; mineral scale often accounts for a weak stream.
  4. Note the make. Photograph the faucet and any model marking on the underside; it speeds the right parts to the door.
  5. Stop if it is more than a drip. A spray, a soft cabinet floor or a wall that feels damp is a leak call, not a project.

A slow drip is not harmless. It wastes water every hour, stains the basin and, under a sink, keeps the cabinet damp enough to rot the floor of it over time.

Showers, tubs and the valves behind the wall

A shower valve or a tub spout that leaks is a different job from a kitchen faucet, because the part is behind tile or a panel. Some valves have a front-access cartridge that can be changed without opening the wall. Others need an access panel cut from the back or a tile removed. Ask which you have before you agree to anything.

  • Is there an access panel behind the wall, in a closet or an adjoining room?
  • Who repairs or replaces the tile, panel or paint after the valve is reached?
  • Does the quote include a new cartridge or valve, and is it a standard part for your brand?
  • Is the stop at the fixture shutting off fully, or does the whole house need to be shut off for the work?
  • Is there damage inside the wall that the visit should look for?

A leak that keeps coming back at a shower wall, or a damp wall on the other side, can mean a leak behind the tile rather than at the fixture. In that case the question moves to tracing a leak behind the wall.

Outdoor hose bibs and a Georgia freeze

Albany does freeze. In January 2024, City of Albany Utilities advised customers to run both hot and cold lines, to keep the thermostat at 50 degrees when away and to have someone check the house. In January 2025 a forecast low of 12 degrees could have tied the city's 1985 record. In February 2026, a South Georgia plumber told WALB that poor insulation caused most of his frozen-pipe calls.

The outdoor spigot is where it often starts. Disconnect hoses before a freeze, cover the bib, and know where the shutoff for that line is. A bib that drips inside the wall after a cold snap is a sign that it froze and cracked, which is a repair worth doing before the next one. If a pipe has already split, the steps are on the split pipe page.

Sinks, drains and water that stays too long

A sink that drains slowly or gurgles is a drain problem, not a faucet problem. A plunger or a cable clears many, and the kitchen side shares its line with a disposal that may be part of the cause, which the disposal page explains. A line that keeps slowing needs a proper drain clearing, and a sink that backs up with other fixtures needs the main line looked at.

Scale is another thing the faucet pays for. The USGS describes the Upper Floridan aquifer as yielding hard water, and the city's 2025 water quality report does not publish a hardness figure, so we cannot give you a number. If aerators clog and chrome clouds quickly, a test is worth doing, and the softener and filter page covers what to do with the result.

Renting an older Albany home: who authorizes fixture repairs

With about 62 percent of homes renter-occupied, according to American Community Survey data via Point2Homes, many fixture calls are a tenant's to report and a landlord's to authorize. Put the leak in writing with a date and a photo before any plumber is booked, and ask who pays.

The median home was built in 1974 in that data, and fixtures from that era can have shutoffs that no longer close and supply lines that have stiffened with age. Ask the plumber to test the shutoffs under the sink and to replace the braided supply lines when the faucet is changed. We found no Albany city statement on permits for fixture swaps, so ask the plumber. Check the plumber's Georgia license class through the state's license page. Commercial restrooms and kitchens should say so when calling.
